A major earthquake struck the Caribbean country Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting death and injury on numerous civillians, the amount of casualties is not yet clear, but is presumed to be in the thousands.

The magnitude 7.0 quake -- the most powerful to hit Haiti in a century -- struck shortly before 5 p.m. and was centered about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. It could be felt strongly in eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away.

The dead and injured lay in the streets even as strong aftershocks rippled through the impoverished Caribbean country.

Many gravely injured people sat in the street, pleading for doctors many hours after the quake. In public squares thousands of people were singing hymns and holding hands.President René Garcia Préval was reported to be safe.
